n-3 PUFAs as Modulators of Stem Cells in Prevention of Colorectal Cancer
نویسندگان
چکیده
Epidemiological and experimental studies have convincingly demonstrated that n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) inhibit the initiation and progression stages of colorectal cancer. Attenuation of cell proliferation and induction of apoptosis by modulation of multiple signaling pathways makes n-3 PUFAs a promising candidate for chemoprevention as well as a dietary adjuvant with other anticancer strategies. These PUFAs maintain intestinal homeostasis by regulating stem cell proliferation mediated through downregulation of Wnt signaling and upregulation of transforming growth factor β mediated signaling events. In addition, owing to their anti-inflammatory nature, these fatty acids also affect the intestinal milieu which has a critical role in maintaining the number of stem cells and their differentiation.

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Trigger Epithelial to Mesenchymal Transition in the HT-29 Colorectal Cancer Cell Line
Background and Objective: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) promote metastasis in colorectal cancer; however, the mechanism underlying this process is not fully understood. Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a key step in tumor acquisition of metastatic phenotype. We aimed to investigate the effect of MSCs on the expression of EMT markers, as well as cancer stem cell markers in HT-29 col...
متن کاملP 115: Potential Therapeutic Targets Related to Neuroinflammation in Treatment and Prevention of Autism
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by great difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with others and using language. In the last four decades many studies have shown that immune responses in different regions of brain play an important role in ASD pathogenicity. A conservative estimate based on the research suggests tha...
متن کاملMarine n-3 fatty acids and colorectal cancer: is there a real link?
To the Editor: Oh et al. (1) investigated the possible inverse association between consumption of fish/n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs, marine omega-3 fatty acids mainly consisting of icosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid) and the risk of colorectal cancer in the Nurses’ Health Study, but failed to observe any link. However, we have documented elevated apoptosis in normal colo...
متن کاملNew Approaches to Use Nanoparticles for Treatment of Colorectal Cancer; a Brief Review
Nanoparticles have been at the center of research focus as a new promising material for the treatment of cancer in recent years. Although many chemotherapy drugs for cancer treatment are available, their potential toxicity is the main point of concern. On the other hand, the conventional chemotherapeutic approach has not been found to be very efficient in colorectal cancer (CRC) as the drug mol...
متن کاملمقایسه اثر دوکوزاهگزایینوییک اسید و ایکوزاپنتایینوییک اسید روغن ماهی بر تکثیر رده سلولی سرطان کولورکتال: گزارش کوتاه
Background: In advanced stages, Colorectal cancer remains often refractory to classic therapies. In consequence, search for new therapeutic modalities with minimal toxicity is of particular interest in colon cancer management. In this regard, powerful growth-inhibitory effect has been shown for fish-oil derived Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) against cancer cells. In ...
